Radio Lapland

A rather bizarre radio station is due to pop up Nationally on Dab for Christmas.   Digital Radio does not seem to cut the mustard, and after back to back birdsong this sound will be out for the Christmas Season.  There is a chance to hear an early review on ebay

A great video of the Mi Amigo at Sea

Thanks to the Radio Caroline Mailing list for pointing me in the direction of this video. Black and White is still a powerful medium and this film shot in 1967 shows Johnnie Walker at work in the studio.  He was popular with the ladies then, and he looks very handsome here. Come to think of it so did Tony Blackburn then, Tony has aged as we all have of course.
Enjoy the video - I must post some pictures I took in 1995 of the Ross Revenge in Docklands, also at Southend later on. I remember seeing the Mi Amigo and MV Galaxy (Radio London on 266) from Holland on Sea Essex when I visited my grand parents in the 1960s.

Classic and recent radio stations remembered on Tee Shirts

One of my friends has a marvellous collection of Radio Station Tee shirts, all unworn, and a while back he allowed me to take some pictures of this collection.

Radio Scilly is a very recent radio station to launch there, and listening on wi fi radio it sounds very good indeed.

Radio Orwell ceased to exist in 1992. Capital Radio 194 was the am transmitter for London Commercial Radio, but originally launched around 538 mtrs, the same frequency used by Radio Veronica, well almost, a while after it left that frequency.

Capital 95.8 was the FM service for what was then the most listened to radio station in London. Now the station has many competitors, and I for one hardly ever listen to it.  I remember with affection the variety of programmes that Capital put out when it launched in 1973, from pop to Classical Music.

Hastings Rock has had many successful RSL broadcasts in Hastings.  Unfortunately it has so far failed to secure a licence to broadcast to that area, and a bland commercial radio station exists.

If any blog visitors have radio tee shirts, I would be interested to receive some pictures to put on the site.

LV18 CRITICAL NEWS. WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Dear Supporter

You will be aware that the Pharos Trust, owners of LV18, and our
volunteers have been striving for 10 years to achieve a permanent berth on
Harwich Quay for the LV18.

Much hard work has enabled us to restore this classic vessel and to have
staged several events like Pirate BBC Essex which have brought thousands of
visitors to Harwich and given great pleasure to many people.

We have come to a point where it might be possible to achieve our dream.
However there are a few who do not want to see this dream become a reality.
Please read the following link article and come to your own conclusions!

Be fair on people with Asperger Syndrome

Don't Write Me Off is our major, new UK-wide campaign to make sure that the benefit system works for people with autism, both supporting those who cannot work and helping those who want to work into employment.
Visit www.dontwritemeoff.org.uk to read our campaign report and people's real-life stories about applying for benefits and finding work, and to watch our campaign DVD.

Asperger syndrome is the brighter end of the spectrum, but presents social problems, and sensitivity to sound and smells and textures amongst many other aspects.

People's experiences of work and benefits

Don't Write Me Off is about the real-life stories of people with autism, as they struggle to find work and achieve financial independence. But it also explores the simple solutions that could be put in place to make sure people with autism can live with dignity and fulfil their individual potential.
We followed a group of people with autism as they applied for Employment and Support Allowance (the new benefit for people who may find it harder to get a job because of their disability), and asked about their experiences of work and applying for benefits. The stark reality for people with autism is apparent:
  • just 15% have a full-time job
  • one-third are currently without a job or access to benefits
  • 79% of those on Incapacity Benefit want to work.
For the system to work for people with autism and the Government to deliver on its commitment that no one should be 'written off', adults with autism need:
  • Employment and Support Allowance to work for them
  • Jobcentre Plus staff to understand and meet their needs
  • a national strategy to transform access to employment.

Take action

The Government must act now to make sure that the benefit system works for the people it is supposed to support. MPs can help us to persuade the Government to make these changes. Ask your MP to support Don't Write Me Off.

You can make a difference by sending your MP an email telling them why the campaign is so important. The greater the pressure we can apply, the greater the chance of success. Email your MP today.

The Pig of Happiness

My wife showed me this charming video this afternoon.  It was mentioned in the Daily Mail yesterday, and it bears a great message. It would be a far better world if we could all be happier, and considerate about each other.  If you want to see this video please enjoy it on site. Many thanks to You Tube and the author!

Radio Talk

On LBC this morning Steve Allen was in his usual fine form.  On a Sunday he reads extracts and comments on them with gusto, and without shame.  This morning he was talking about a new vest which holds your stomach in to make you look slim.  He commented that it was suggested that this was a good buy for a present. He did not think it was that kind as it said that you are fat to a friend!  Next he revealed that some years ago he bought a belt designed to make one look slimmer.  He got back a big rubber band. This worked and flattened his tummy, but gave him boobs!  He likened it to the effect a wonder bra gives ladies.  Great radio, and this chirpy fellow has his own blog Steve Allens Blog

I have been enjoying a new back to back music station
on wi fi radio playing music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s
This is how they describe themselves:
This is where you will hear the very best music from the very best era of music, the 1950's, 1960's and the 1970's.
From Rock 'n' Roll legends like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent, the 1950's comes alive on Flower Power Radio. The Swinging 1960's live on through the music of the decade; The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Motown, Psychedelia, pop... the music that shaped a generation! The funk, disco and rock of the 1970's sounds better than ever here on Flower Power Radio; David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Roxy Music....its all here.

Flower Power Radio

Most impressed with a BBC TV advertisement I saw this weekend to promote dab radio.  It shows a radio set changing from a very old set right up to a dab radio. Great to see Radio on Television, and very cleverly edited together. What they do not mention is that dab is a flawed system. That is in my opinion, it needs a perfect aerial, and in common with all digital sound glitches or cuts out if the signal is weak. We are lucky in the London area, but people in the regions are lucky to receive all the BBC services alone!

On Saturday Fi Glover continues to do an excellent Saturday Live on Radio 4.  She has a section on the show called Inheritance Tracks. This week Monty Don the gardener chose Kathleen Ferrier's "Blow the Wind Southerly".  The feature asks people to recollect songs that they heard in their young years. The show is a great selection of speech, verse and talk. Saturday Live information Fi has also written a very entertaining book called "Travels With My Radio".
Excellent review of Fi Glover's book
